Hikers Plan to Rappel Down Eaton Canyon Waterfall, Airlifted Instead

This summer has been an especially dramatic one for Eaton Canyon. After two hikers died when falling near the waterfalls, officials issued warnings cautioning visitors of the swollen falls along the popular path. Altadena Patch stirred up a discussion on how the public can help prevent deaths in Eaton Canyon. Yet the area continues to experience rescue missions.

Three hikers who planned to rappel down the falls on Saturday were instead airlifted from the trail on Sunday afternoon, reports Altadena Patch. Concerned family members called the L.A. County Sheriff's Department Altadena Station on Sunday morning when the group failed to descend.

Rescuers had little information regarding the group's whereabouts and spent most of the morning hunting for the hikers. When found, the trio appeared exhausted but unharmed and were taken to the Huntington Memorial Hospital for examination.

I'm sorry but what happened? The family called the Sheriff's when the group "failed to descend"? Do you mean they called them after they didn't return home when they said they would or they didn't call them at the planned check-in time? How did the family know they didn't descend? Was the family waiting for them down by the waterfall?
