The Butthole Surfers may or may not be shredding the stage at next weekend's Sunset Junction Street Fair. Unless organizers pay back $267,000 in police staffing and police closure fees, the show will not go on. If cancelled, street fair goers will not be clapping their hands and saying yeah. They'll be clenching their fists and saying other four-letter words.

The festival's fate will be determined on Monday, August 22, at a public meeting of the Los Angeles City Board of Public Works, reports Buzz Bands. Slated for 9:30am in Room 350 at City Hall, the meeting is also available online via live audio.

Attorney Jerry Neuman argues that the fees are too high when compared to similar events. The Sunset Junction Fair is required to pay $142,000 this year in identical fees. Ouch.

Founder Michael McKinley, according to Tonya Durrell of the Department of Public Works, has been informed via written letter that the Board has received recommendation to deny Sunset Junction's permit, reports Echo Park Patch.

Anyone remember all the trash that was left sitting in some of the streets, ignorned until blogs called attention to it? SJSF stopped being a good neighbor a while ago...
and have we ever seen an accounting of where the money actually goes? Who really benefits?
A side comment:  Patch sites seem to cover some semi-controversial issues but there's seldom interesting debate on the comments...

  • This must be how they sell remaining tickets every year. Because every year, about a week or two out, they get a spate of publicity about how the show might or might not go on. Brilliant PR.
