Sometimes the good deeds of Southern Californians truly impress us, and this past Friday's example of selflessness and hospitality certainly rang our "compassionate local" bell. The humanitarian in Santa Ana Zoo's Director, Kent Yamaguchi, surfaced on Friday after a woman's engagement ring went flying off her finger into the mucky muck of the Amazon's Edge exhibit, reports CBS LA.

Sheila Clark from Colorado and daughter, Isabel, were enjoying the exhibit when Clark began fidgeting with her ring ringer. Both rings - wedding band and engagement ring - slipped off her finger and bounced onto the deck at her feet. Succeeding in recovering her wedding band, Clark was not so lucky with her engagement ring. She watched as it fell into eight feet of "watery muck."

“People drop things in here every once in a while - a hat, sunglasses,” Yamaguchi said.

But in this case, he felt extraordinarily sympathetic to Clark's predicament.

“If I lost my ring, I’d be devastated,” he said.

Armed with a pair of wading boots, he sifted through the muck. After a short search, he retrieved the fallen piece of jewelry.

"All of a sudden I saw a glint of gold," said Yamaguchi.

Would you willingly trudge through feet of muddy, watery filth for a stranger?
