San Bernardino Sheriff's Detective Killed While Bicycling

Duane Parkinson, a 42-year-old husband and father of three, was killed on Wednesday, August, 10, after being struck by an SUV while riding his bicycle in Irvine. Parkinson was also a San Bernardino County deputy, reports Daily Pilot. He was off-duty at the time of the incident.

Occurring around 1pm on Shady Canyon Drive, south of Quail Hill Parkway, the fatal collision involved a 35-year-old woman who was driving a Mercedes-Benz SUV and an infant passenger. Neither passengers were injured in the crash.

"My thoughts and prayers are with Duane's family during this very difficult time," San Bernardino Sheriff Rod Hoops said in a prepared statement. "Det. Parkison was a motivated member of the department dedicated to the safety of the residents of San Bernardino County," he added. "He will be greatly missed by all who had the honor of knowing and working with him."

Parkinson's funeral is slated for Wednesday, August 15, in Rancho Cucamonga, and a memorial fund for his family has been established in his name.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
