San Bernardino Lifts Food Truck Restrictions
Food trucks, pump up those tires and fill those tanks. San Bernardino County is opening its arms a little wider for you.
The Board of Supervisors reached an agreement on Tuesday to lessen mobile food facility restrictions, reports San Bernardino County Sun.
Currently, San Bernardino and Riverside counties are the only two California counties that limit food trucks to special events-only business. Establishing a new category of "hot food truck events," the amendment to a county ordinance will permit food trucks to operate at sites beyond the current temporary special events restriction.
While Supervisors Janice Rutherford and Bard Mitzelfelt called for unrestricted food truck operation in the county, Supervisor Neil Derry countered their argument, suggesting that allowing food truck operation anywhere in the county would "be opening up the floodgates."
"We're not reinventing the wheel here," said Rutherford, noting that 56 other counties have successfully regulated and enforced food truck operations.
Jay Smith, owner of Texifornia Tamale Co. in Blue Jay, dreams of expanding his restaurant via catering trucks.
"I think we made a step in a positive direction here today," Smith said after Tuesday's supervisors meeting. "It's not entirely what we wanted, but it's government, and it's a series of baby steps."
