Phish Debuts '50 Ways To Leave Your Lover' Cover At The Hollywood Bowl

It will be hard not to inhale today's video lunch. In their first Los Angeles show since 2003, Phish held a curfew-conscious concert at the Hollywood Bowl on Monday night. It was both their venue debut, and the debut of Paul Simon's "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" cover featuring Jon Fishman on lead vocals and drums from his front & center mini-kit setup. Also there was a moment of feedback. Another first at the Hollywood Bowl (at least for this concert-goer).

  • It should probably also be mentioned that having Jon Fishman sing this song makes it a little bit of a tongue-in-cheek cover and not really indicative of Phish musically. He routinely covers crazy songs like "Mmmmbop" or "Sexual Healing."

Amazing show!!! They came out swinging (Down with Disease) and killed the first set w/ other highlights: Cities, Peaches en Regalia (both covers) and nice tip to the area with Tube "on a freeway in Los Angeles once the spraying has been done" (insert crowd roar). 2nd set seemed like it might be darker with Carini opening but went full party mode from there with Crosseyed & Painless, Twist, Mikes....Weekapaug and Quinn the Eskimo to close it out with an arm-around-your-neighbor sing-a-long.  Stealing Time is a great encore but they weren't done there, closing it out with Julius - a nice Hoist bookend on a great show.

I only left out the "50 ways" surprise since it was already covered but that was super awesome too.

Lastly big props to the Hollywood Bowl staff.  From what I encountered everyone was friendly even when maintaining order and a good time was had by all.

P.S. @Lisa - if you didn't know...your ticket stub barcode number gets you the show on mp3 at phish.com. Other bands (including the LA Phil) should take note! I've already downloaded last night's show and the quality is A+.
