Coyote Attacks on Dogs Increasing in OC
Coyotes in the Laguna Woods area are getting bold, and more deadly than usual, reports ABC7.
Coyotes often attack at night. But in the OC neighborhood, they've recently been getting more aggressive, even attacking pets on leashes while their owners are walking them. So far this week, three dogs have been attacked, and one was killed.
Karen Sherif, who owned the dog that died, tells ABC7 her story:
During her morning walk Tuesday, her 12-year-old Yorkshire Terrier named Pooh was killed by a coyote."She stopped to smell something as dogs do, and I walked a few more steps, and the next thing I heard was a yelp," described Sherif. She said the coyote had her dog in its jaws, and she never heard another sound from the terrier.
Sherif said she found Pooh's body 15 minutes later on the sidewalk near her house with a broken neck.
Research has shown that coyotes typically attack domestic pets more often in winter and spring, when food is harder to come by, and that they tend to favor smaller pets like cats and little dogs. Attacks in the OC are fairly common.
