California houses the headquarters of the world's top social media sites - Facebook, Twitter, Google, LinkedIn, Myspace - they're all here in the golden state. Tripl, a Sweden-based social travel startup, whipped up a lengthy infographic called "The Social Travel Revolution." Their studies note the impact of 'social' on travel.

One of the most interesting bits on the infographic appears right at the top and concludes that more Americans use Facebook than have passports.

While 115k Americans own passports (and hopefully use them), 155k Americans travel the world (wide web), via Facebook. Tripl breaks this data down into percents.

*50% of all Americans socialize with friends and family through Facebook.

*37% of all Americans own a passport.

*63% of all Americans can't travel outside the U.S.

The infograph shares a bevvy of other statistics concerning Tripl's social media platform insight, including that of college students.

*96% of all university students are on Facebook.

We wonder how many Angelenos lack international experiences. We do know that at least 6.1 million L.A. residents use Facebook, according to a report by All Facebook in August of 2010.

all inforgraphics are ads directed towards dipshit advertisers. this is no exception. i hope they are paying you, LAist.

  • 37% is way more than I would have guessed had passports. I would have pegged the figure at around 10%.

  • Correlating Facebook with passport ownership is stupid. If that isn't obvious, I'm not sure what to say. How many Americans who don't have passports use Flickr? Or Google? Or Twitter? Or any of the dozens of social networking sites? This is just a marketing stunt for a travel-oriented social network which wants more users. I guess it worked, at least a little.

  • Maybe we don't leave the country much, but that's because there's so much to see and do in our own country. We have practically every ecosystem in the 50 states.
