Kinda I Want To, But Trent Says No: 'Ignore' Pretty Hate Machine Re-issue, Says Reznor

Trent Reznor is pretty much hating the the Pretty Hate Machine re-issue and took to Twitter to tip off fans about the latest catalog offering, according to Billboard.biz.

Calling last week's release, "a record label bullshit move repackaging the old version," the Nine Inch Nails frontman continued via Twitter, "Ignore please." He told his 928,595 followers, "don't waste your money on this version of PHM that was just released: http://www.nincatalog.com/item.asp?key=01-00275 ."

A subsidiary of Universal music rereleased NIN's 1989 debut Pretty Hate Machine, without any re-mastering. The tweet linked a catalog entry for the release, which itself said the re-release is "very similar to the TVT version" and "not remastered." TVT is the album's original label.

That image he linked to is not the re-mastered version. That looks like an exact repackaging of the original CD release. It's well documented that he worked hard on the remastering, make sure you get the proper new release. It updates the cover art, it's no longer pink, so that's a good way to tell.

  • PHM never needed remastering in my opinion. But it was a nice option, for fans, to make it sound more modern. By modern, I mean hyper-compressed. The remaster will only sound "better" in your car while driving, or ripped to your ipod w/out noise isolating earbuds. If Trent doesn't want me giving the record company any more money when my physical copy gets damaged, that's another issue. I'm fine with finding a used copy or downloading a bit-perfect copy of the original master instead. Or better yet a nice vinyl rip! My advice is listen to both with good headphones in a quiet environment and decide for yourself.

  • Trent would probably prefer that you steal it vs buy it from TVT
