No Peanuts For PETA: Eight Elephants Parade Through Downtown, Free Of Protest
Monday night marked the traditional moonlight elephant walk in downtown Los Angeles. Fresh off the train, eight Asian elephants arrived in Vernon around midnight, all performers in the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus, as blogged by the LA Times.
Shockingly, there was no organized PETA protest put on at the three-mile trunk-to-tail parade, led by a group of ten show horses and their trainers. Last July PETA protested the summer show in downtown with the help of The Daily Show's Olivia Munn, and they have plans to protest again tomorrow, in broad daylight.
PETA's fervent protesting of animal abuse in circuses, namely Ringling Bros., has taken the group all over the country and spurred numerous write-ups of beast neglect. The "Circuses" section on the PETA website details Ringling Bros.' inhumane treatment of animals, complete with an appalling slideshow. Additional animals in entertainment PETA articles are equally relentless in their mission - Circuses: Three Rings of Abuse and Top Five Reasons To Protest Ringling - not to mention their sister site, Ringling Beats Animals, where they dub the circus "The Saddest Show On Earth."
The gentle giants ended their march at the Staples Center, where they will perform in the circus' "Fully Charged" spectacle from Wednesday through Sunday.
Animal rights advocates (and/or circus fans) may continue down to Anaheim for the show's upcoming performances from July 27-August 7.
*Ed. note: An earlier version of this story indicated PETA was not present at all during the walk, however we were informed they did have staff members present capturing footage.
