Hold on to your cell phones, Angelenos. Los Angeles ranks third in the top ten cities experiencing cell phone loss or theft, as detailed in this handy infographic, courtesy of Lookout, a San Francisco mobile security company. Almost half of L.A. residents, 44% to be exact, have lost or had their phones stolen.

Many of us can identify with such a debilitating loss - the immediate panic that instantly floods minds and bodies, the frantic searching and accusations, the sense of hopelessness, worthlessness and overall disconnect from the world. Cell phone misfortune classifies as a significant issue for U.S. consumers today as 96% of the population use mobile phones.

Lookout's infographic also details the top ten worst places to lose your phone along with a percentage chance of recovery. Without cell phone after hustling through airport security? You might get lucky with a 50-100% chance of recovery. If your device has gone missing during or after a bus or subway ride, prepare to invest in a new mobile phone. This scenario's chance of recovery is a slim 0-2%. And for you ladies lugging around abysses of personal items, do not despair while digging through your load. The chance of recovery is 95-100%. The chance of frustration and dumping the bag's contents are presumably equivalent.

Lookout recommends downloading helpful apps to aid in locating your missing device. A Find My Phone app assists in tracking down your phone from a computer or another smartphone. Boasting even more technological genius is the Lookout Mobile Security app which permits you to view your lost or stolen device on a map plus sound an alarm.

Conclusion? Be mindful of your belongings, surroundings and actions. Always.
