Summer Of Roofies In Venice Beach

Going out in Venice tonight, ladies? Guard your drinks. Over the last month, two separate incidents have been reported by three different women involving being "roofied" at local Venice bars, as reported by Yo! Venice. Names of locations remain anonymous, but reports list both an Abbot Kinney bar and a bar on Washington near the Venice Pier as occurrence sites. Fortunately neither case involved rape.

The LAPD Pacific Division is aware of these reports and urges victims to contact them at 310-482-6334.

"Roofies" is the street name for Rohypnol, a date rape drug. One of the cases may have involved GHB, also known as gamma-hydroxybutyric acid, another date rape drug. For a lesson in date rape drugs, click here.

Rohypnol's tasteless, odorless and quickly dissolving characteristics make it extremely difficult to detect in a drink. Be watchful of your drinks, your friends' drinks and fellow bar-goers. Never leave a drink unattended. Never accept a drink from a stranger. Never drink alone.
