Pencil This In: Islamaphobia, Punch Crawl, BBQ & American Writings
Summer beckons Angelenos outdoors, and at least one of tonight's local events are sure to tickle your fancy. Project Fresh hosts a night of documentary films, though if you're feeling more literary tonight, visit the Hammer Museum for this evening's presentation of Hammer Readings. If you entertain frequently and need to bone up on your grilling skills, learn from a master at STK. Slept through your morning workout? Walk your way through several of downtown's best bars with your punchcard.
FILM*
Project Fresh, in partnership with Women’s Voices Now, presents Crossroads: The Intersection of Cultural and Religious Norms tonight at the Downtown Independent. Several international short documentary films will screen with the intent to “strip back the media veneer and cultivate a dialogue that reveals the true life conflicts between religion and politics; tradition and modernity.” Each film explores the rise of Islamaphobia in America with topics ranging from personal identity, sexuality and the struggle for individual rights. Following the screening begins a panel discussion with one of the film’s directors and an international media expert specializing in this cultural tension. Stay for rooftop drinks post-discussion. 8pm-10pm. Doors open at 7pm. $10 regular admission. Students tickets by donation. Register online. Proceeds are donated to Women’s Voices Now.
FOOD
Summer is here, and it's time to BBQ. STK's newest cooking program, Couples Cook Let Them Eat, launches tonight at the STK LA Patio. Courtesy of STK LA’s Chef Larry Greenwood, participants will "grill up the perfect meal" during a four-course interactive cooking lesson. 6pm-9pm. $80 per person; $180 per couple. Ticket prices exclude tax, tip and beverage. RSVP to eolsen@togrp.com.
BEVERAGE
Exercise? Check! Booze? Check! If you can handle five hours of drinking and walking, Thrillist's Downtown Punch Crawl 2011 invites you to imbibe tonight with six custom-crafted punches. This libation marathon visits six of downtown's finest drinkeries: Varnish, Cana Rum Bar, Drago Centro, Cole's, The Falls Lounge and Bar & Kitchen. Thirsty participants should begin at either Cole's or Bar Kitchen. 6pm-11pm. $25.
