What's That Giant Red Line On This Terrifying Unemployment Chart?

Is this "the scariest unemployment chart ever?" the OC Register asks of Business Insider's claim. With Friday's sobering U.S. unemployment report painting an un-pretty picture, did anyone really think an actual picture would make them feel better? Cue the economists at Calculated Risk who, while looking for evidence an economic recovery, instead found all these terrible little lines. Especially the red one.

Via Business Insider:

This chart measures the percentage of jobs lost during various recessions, and the pace of recovery. As you can see, this recession saw WAY more aggressive job cutting than in the past, and the recovery has been anemic.

  • "Hey i got a brilliant idea! Let's cut more jobs!"

Sound crazy? thats what Republicans want to do. Cut more government jobs. Throwing more people out of work that will default on home loans/car loans and need government help to just pay for the essentials & healthcare. The idea that Government can't do anything is a falsehood. A lie by special interests who want our tax money to work for them, not us.

Want this terrible line to get better? how about we get some JOBS bills in congress. The Republican house hasn't proposed ONE!

Want it to get worse? Ok let's keep cutting because it sounds so good! Cut Cut Cut all the jobs away. Cutting will NOT solve the economic problem. The debt may be high but its time to raise revenues and get people back to work. Anything else is just having the poor and middle class carry debt on their back while the richest got tax cuts. Sorry for my rant.

  • And the Republicans believe that the nation should eliminate social security, medicaid and other programs which are the last resort for so many. I guess that is one way to solve the unemployment problem: kill off the weak, in this case the elderly, the sick, and the unemployed.

i got a solution, liquidate goldman sachs. you will be doing the entire world a favor.

  • Government cannot create jobs, they can create false, temporary employment that will only exist as long as the money is stolen from the rest of us, but eventually SOMEONE has to pay.

  • Put down the Ayn Rand and go outside already.
