She & Her: 'I LOVE DOWNTOWN LA' Says Zooey Deschanel In Open Letter Response To Opinion Piece Blast

Skewered in a L.A. Times opinion piece, Zooey Deschanel has posted an open letter to Patt Morrison on Hello Giggles, accusing the journalist of launching a "misguided personal attack" and spinning a baseless caricature of the actress/singer by taking a quote fragment out of context.

I feel compelled to respond to your recent blog post regarding comments I “allegedly” made outside the BAFTA dinner on Saturday night. I never spoke to you at this event; in fact, you weren’t even there. I am completely and utterly shocked that a professional journalist, whom I have never met, would take a partial quote out of context and use it as the basis for a misguided personal attack. Further, I find it appalling that you would resort to name-calling to get your point across. In a court of law this would be called hearsay, and in journalism, I believe this should be the beginning of an investigation, not the end of one.
Deschanel, a LA-native, said the context of the alleged quote was in reference to the trash-strewn parking lot adjacent to the theater and the humorous juxtaposition of the evening's event. She went on in her letter to loudly (read: caps) proclaim her love for downtown LA. Also, she points out, "I do not live on the Westside," and she wished Morrison has chosen a more "sophisticated" way of expressing herself than to call her "a cow."

Parts of Downtown are a shit hole. Why do you think they want to "bring back Broadway?" We go to downtown at least once and month or more and it would be wonderful to see all of the buildings and landmarks restored, especially Spring Street Arcade. All of downtown can look as beautiful as Belasco someday.

  • I gotta say, I enjoy Patt, but she's completely in the wrong here.

Sorry Zooey, it's too late for apologies.

  • I'm definitely a fan of Patt's (she's one of the reasons why I contribute to KPCC), but I agree that her article was absolutely a misguided attack on Zoey, especially since it was based on another person's account at a party.

  • Mucho doodoo about nothing. It was a slow news day for Morrison, and no on-set call for Zooey.

I don't know Zooey, can't be bothered to learn the name of every new actress/etc but I do know Patt Morrison and have enjoyed her writings in the Times and her commentaries first on KCET and now on KPCC and I doubt her article was as shallow as Zooey makes it out to be.
Ms Morrison will continue to do her job chronicling and commenting while Zooey tries to create a faux-media storm about this, thereby gaining more media attention.
I would almost think it was a set up by Zooey's agent to get her more publicity but I really doubt Patt Morrison would be involved in something so tasteless and jejeune.

  • is @1gabriele42:disqus really patt morrison?  i think so!!

  • Ms Morrison was clearly in the wrong here.

Maybe you should actually READ Patt's column, it was pretty vicious.

Sorry, Zooey, nobody is buying it. What's wrong with William and Kate seeing the poorer parts of LA? The royals are on welfare for crying out loud.

Patt Morrison is a stupid old cow in hat who needs to shut her pie hole.
