Over 220 campaigns aiming to section California into halves or even thirds have been defeated since the 1850s. Supervisor Jeff Stone of Riverside County introduces the latest secession proposal. Blaming left-wing Sacramento for the state's economic crisis, Stone’s proposal gathers thirteen conservative Republican counties, including Riverside, and forms them into the nation’s 51st state - “South California.”
According to the Los Angeles Times, Stone’s proposal rejects Los Angeles, which bears little shock to the liberal, Democratic sprawl.
"Los Angeles is purposely excluded because they have the same liberal policies that Sacramento does. The last thing I want to do is create a state that's a carbon copy of what we have now,'' Stone said. "Los Angeles just enacted a ban on plastic grocery bags. That put three or four manufacturers out of business.''
Calling Stone’s proposal a “laughable political stunt,” Gil Duran, a spokesman for Governor Jerry Brown, advises Stone shift his focus to address the real issues, like Riverside County’s estimated $130-million revenue shortfall in the next budget year.
