Pencil This In: Tribute Bands, The Princess Bride and Puppets
Today marks July's first Wednesday. Celebrate by getting out and experiencing something new. If you know who Inigo Montoya is, your decision for this evening is made. Head to Santa Monica's Third Street Promenade for an outdoor screening of The Princess Bride. If you prefer to stay indoors, choose one of two entertaining performances - Jemima Puddle-Duck or Cubensis & Highway 61 Revisited - or make the trek to Glendale for an exhibition dedicated to artist David Edward Byrd.
FILM*
Downtown Santa Monica's weekly summertime movie series, Cinema on the Street, debuts tonight with an outdoor showing of The Princess Bride. Occurring every Wednesday throughout July, weekly classics will be projected on an outdoor movie screen on Third Street Promenade between Wilshire and Arizona, just outside of Chipotle. Bring a blanket or beach chairs and get comfortable with family and/or friends. Parking is available in structures 1-9 throughout the downtown zone. Enter after 6pm to receive the flat $5 rate. 7:30pm. Time is subject to change depending on sunset. Free.
PUPPETRY
Hudson Vagabond Puppets performs Jemima Puddle-Duck, a puppet ballet featuring the stories of Jemima Puddle-Duck and Fierce Bad Rabbit by Beatrix Potter, at The Levitt Pavilion Pasadena. Incorporating masks, costumes and rod puppets up to eight feet tall, the puppeteers borrow from the traditional Japanese Bunraku puppetry style and have delighted the audiences of several national symphony orchestras. Guests are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy food, drinks and other items from local vendors, connect with non-profit organizations, listen to pre-concert music and grab a prime space. 6pm-8pm. Free.
MUSIC
Two legendary tribute bands perform tonight in Cubensis & Highway 61 Revisited at the House of Blues in WeHo. Recognized as the "greatest Grateful Dead tribute" in existence, Cubensis has over 22 years of "the Grateful Dead experience" under their belts and are plenty qualified and able to rock, classically that is. Highway 61 Revisited jams as the world's only Bob Dylan tribute band, keeping the "poetry, symbolism and power of Dylan's greatest performances" alive. Doors open at 8pm. Shows starts at 9pm. $17.50 GA.
ART
Another flashback event takes place tonight at the Brand Library Art Galleries in Glendale. Showcasing works by renowned artist and graphic designer David Edward Byrd, The Byrd Show: 40 Years of Art & Design displays from June 11 through July 22. "Who does not recognize the famous "Follies" poster (the original is owned by The Smithsonian), or the Jimi Hendrix Experience poster, ranked by Billboard as the 8th best rock concert poster of all time!" Wednesday hours are 12pm-6pm. Free.
