Pencil This In: Cheeses, Viral Videos, Haute Dogs and Books
June is nearing its end, so why not end it on a high note? Tonight's offerings begin with a lesson in cheese and end with a lesson in literacy. Andrew's Cheese Shop holds its acclaimed Cheese 101 course this evening, but if you and dairy refuse to be friends, eat at home then head to the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre for a dose of enlivened viral videos. If you feel bad leaving your dog at home, do not despair. Bark N' Bitches invites you and your four-legged compadre to their summer singles night. Perhaps a group reading of a newly released literary journal sounds more tempting tonight. L.A.'s got it all, and all the deets are below.
FOOD
Not many things prove more rewarding on a Wednesay than a delicious sampling of fine cheeses. Andrew of Andrew's Cheese Shop in Santa Monica presents Cheese 101, an educational invitation to learn the history, origin and basics of this dairy delight. According to the site, "Andrew will have you laughing the whole way through!" Students sample famous cheeses, so grab your friends, mate or date and reserve a spot online now! 7:30pm-9:30pm. $36.
THEATER
Calling all Internet video lovers! Video Killed the Internet Star: A Viral Video Show debuts tonight at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. This comedic presentation selects the best in viral videos and brings them to the stage. "See what happened after David went to the dentist. Know how that news reporter recovered after she called a man gay--instead of blind. Find out what happens after you see a kitten in a top hat get punched in the face." Directed by Julie Brister and written and performed by Kyle Fitzpatrick. 6:30pm-7:30pm. $5. Reservations can be made online.
DATING AND DOGS*
Join Renee Simlak Productions and the ladies of Three Day Rule for the Singles Summer Haute Dog Party at L.A.'s fashionable dog boutique, Bark N' Bitches. Mingle with other singles and their pooches while enjoying drinks and appetizers (dog treats included). Tonight's ode to unattached dog lovers features a guest appearance by Patrice Ryan, celebrity pet psychic, Buddha Dog Animal Massage, a Haute Doggie Fashion Show, complimentary grooming plus a silent auction and raffle benefiting Best Friends Animal Society. 7pm-10pm. Tickets are $10 online and $15 at the door.
BOOKS
Book Soup hosts a group reading of The Rattling Wall tonight in celebration of its recent release. Published semiannually and edited by Michelle Meyerling, the L.A.-based literary journal reviews sophisticated short fiction, travel essays and poetry for print. Presented by PEN Center USA, the reading features five guest readers - Sam Dunn, Libby Flores, Alisa Slaughter, KM Droney and Eric Layer - who will read selections from their work published in the journal. Drinks follow the readings. 7pm-9pm. Free. Signed editions of The Rattling Wall retail for $18.95.
