As skateboarders turned out in droves for "Wild in the Streets," an event put on by clothing and shoe company Emerica, cops were at the ready to ticket mischievous skaters, should there be any.

And indeed, there were. KABC reports that:

Skateboarders blocked streets, congested traffic and hung onto cars...Dozens of citations were issued. Some of the skaters were handcuffed, but there were no arrests made and no vandalism was reported.

Wily skateboarders! Always...on the road.

The event involved getting skateboarders together to travel across town, from Hollenbeck Park to Venice Beach. It's listed on the company's website as a way to raise money for Boards for Bros., a non-profit that refurbishes skateboards and hands them out to kids who can't afford them, and also as a way to "build community and raise awareness of skateboarding and the needs of skateboarders, and to unite skateboarders through a central cause."

In terms of police handing out tickets at the event, things are a little different when it comes to skateboarding and the law, notes KABC, since unlike cyclists, those on boards are not obligated to follow road rules.

  • I love how professional street skateboarding is full of 15 year old kids. Nyjah won 150K at street league...x games 17 is coming up july 28-31st at l..a live with most of the same dudes competing, and yet it's still heavily regarded as a some sort of outlaw activity.

  • I watch skateboard tournaments all the time on tv and i always see the pros like p rod or ryan sheckler with their skateboards so shiny.http://ultraberryslim.org/

...and those on boards are not allowed on the street (even in bicycle lanes, which are for bicycles only.)  In many places, they aren't allowed on the sidewalks either.  Which leaves...?
