U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced Wednesday that a 37-year-old U.S. citizen was arrested last week at the Otay Mesa border crossing when officials found "159 pounds of concealed iguana meat hidden in coolers underneath fish," according to a news release.

The male suspect, whose name was not released, declared bringing the fish from Mexico, and was selected by CBP officers for further inspection. Authorities examining three large coolers found fish meat concealing the iguana meat below.

Agents from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service charged the man with criminal activity and seized the iguana meat.

I don't get what the issue is here. Also, why was he bringing it over? Is Iguana meat commonly eaten? I have no issue against eating them but I have never heard of this, even among Latino communities.

Shouldn't this be in the food section?

Where was that iguana meat going and what was it going to be used for? Tastes like chicken or passed off as chicken?

  • "Warning: Horrible Photo"? It's nothing worse than what is sitting in the shelf at Whole Foods right now.

  • There goes taco tuesday for next week...

I have never eaten Iguana but the meat is not illegal - at least in Mexico. Iguanas reproduce quite readily and in places like South Florida, they are considered a pest. if anything, I would consider them a 'renewable' resource.

Who cares if they're illegal? It's not like laws matter to law enforcers. The important thing I get from this story is that the Otay Mesa border crossing employees are going to have one very impressive BBQ this weekend.

Let me guess...  Tastes like chicken?

What are you talking about? That looks delicious.

    is iguana meat illegal?

  • FarleyElliott

Yeah, I'm missing the part where I read that iguana meat is illegal for some reason...

  • If you're going to post the full, disgusting picture, why even bother giving a ridiculous "Warning: horrible photo" ?

  • Uh, iguana is not a fish.

    no shit.
