Closed for nearly 18 months following the Station Fire, the newly reopened section of Angeles Crest Highway registered two fatal accidents on Friday, according to L.A. Now and 818 Now.

A 48-year-old man plunged approximately 675 feet to his death after driving his car over the edge of the highway above La CaƱada Flintridge at about 4:30 p.m. on Friday. According to the California Highway Patrol, the unnamed Monterey Park resident "abruptly turned left at a straightaway west of Angeles Forest Highway," causing the accident.

Earlier, around 3:00 a.m., 21-year-old Julio Velasquez of Pasadena was killed when he crashed into a tree near mile marker 31 after losing control of his vehicle. CHP officers suspect alcohol may have been a factor in that death and are awaiting coroner’s toxicology reports.
