go-day-get-outdoors-logo.jpg Nonprofit organizations, federal agencies, and members of the recreation industry have partnered for National Get Outdoors Day, a new annual event aimed to encourage "healthy, active outdoor fun," with a variety of traditional and non-traditional types of outdoor activities. Reconnecting kids to the great outdoors and getting visitors to public lands are main goals of the event.

Each GO Day event will offer a mix of information centers and “active fun” areas - places where guests, and especially kids, can use a fishing pole, go geocaching, help pitch a tent and more...Many sites also feature areas that focus on other aspects of healthy living, including sustainability and good nutrition.

In addition to the GO Day events, participants will be invited to nearby follow-up activities called EchO events occurring throughout the summer, which include introductions to mountain biking and fly-fishing, hikes with rangers to see wildlife, kayaking and rafting and much more.

The list of 112 official GO Day 2011 sites includes nearby, nature-tastic destinations like Castaic Lake State Recreation Area, Children's Nature Institute, the National Children's Forest in San Bernardino, and the Sun Harbor Marina in San Diego. Check out other participating locations in California and around the country, or go nature exploring on your own!
