What's Your Favorite Traffic-Themed Nickname for the Big July 405 Shutdown?

During a press conference held this morning by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and other local officials, Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavksy referred to the 53 hours in mid-July when the 405 Freeway will be shut down for the Mulholland Bridge demolition as "car-mageddon." Good one, Mr. Y!

Yaroslavsky can also take credit for another nickname for the project, the "mother of all traffic jams," according to CBS2, who note that officials are warning motorists about this traffic "nightmare."

The nightmare, of course, is when the 405 is going to be shut down exactly where it could hurt the most. Metro recently explained:

On Friday, July 15, ramps along the 10 mile closure will begin to be shut down as early as 7 p.m., and closure of freeway lanes will begin at 10 p.m. to ensure full freeway closure by midnight. The closure will continue until 5 a.m. Monday morning, July 18. Ramps and connectors will be reopened by 6 a.m. During this closure, the Mulholland Bridge, I-405 freeway and access ramps will be closed.

Gah! We've called this a "blackout" and "fubar," but, frankly, so far it hasn't gotten much better than "car-mageddon." (Though not concise, we do appreciate our readers who referred to that weekend as "aka going out of town" time.) What's your favorite traffic-themed nicknamed for this upcoming bleak period in our driving lives? Come on--it's gonna hurt less if we laugh about it!

Ha! We used "Carmegeddon" about two years ago to describe the hysterical reaction of the NY Post to the pedestrian mall in Times Square!

  • How about the "big I'm not going to be in town anyway".

Phew.  Dodged a bullet on that one.

  • I think we should call it 'get out your bike and ride 'cause your car's going to be useless' weekend.

Find a nice boutique hotel in Santa Barbara or Solvang and just get out of town.  No problemo.
  • Everyone is hyping up the calamity of this event, but I'm sure for at least some of the people in the position of living directly in proximity to the contaminated air particles and constant thunder of noise pollution normally produced by the 405, it will be a welcome respite.
  • I don't know, Gary. I live close enough to the construction zone to imagine that it's probably going to be deafeningly loud all weekend.
