Actor Colin Hanks (son of Tom) could have begged dear ol' dad for a loan to get his movie made, but instead has turned to the crowdsource cash flux of Kickstarter, raising the money he needs to make a documentary on the now-defunct Tower Records music store chain.

IFC tells the tale of the younger Hanks' three-year quest to make what his dad called on Twitter "a great docu" on the music retailer that went bust in 2006, but that began in 1960 in Hanks' hometown of Sacramento.

To complete the film, called "All Things Must Pass," Hanks has a goal of $50,000, towards which the plebes have pledged over $40,000. Donors get a few perks, notes, IF: "$5 gets you a 'special "Thank You"' in the credits. Other sums get you poster art, DVD's and the like with $500, buying you 2 VIP Tickets to the premiere in Sacramento. A donation of $2,000 gets you a private screening in LA."

Say the filmmakers:

We hope that with a little help from you, and the Kickstarter collective, we will be able to see this project to completion. Your donation will go towards the small nuts and bolts of filmmaking. These monies will help pay for various production and post production costs; including things like equipment rentals, additional personnel, and travel to locations to conduct interviews.

Here's Hanks' pitch:

Check out what the unfinished film's and Tower Records fans are saying about the docu on Facebook, too.

    Good on the lad.
Then again, though, it's only "defunct" in the brick-&-mortar sense; tower.com is alive and well and still selling lots of neat stuff on the intarwebz.
