Shots rang out last night around 8:30 p.m. in a South Los Angeles neighborhood, striking a man, and fatally striking his two-year-old nephew, who he held in his arms. The man and child were "not the intended targets," the Los Angeles Police Department told ABC7.

The bullets that struck both victims in the head traveled far, according to authorities. LAPD Capt. Mark Olvera explains: "It looks like [the bullets] did go through some vehicle and then passed through a fence, and maybe have even gone through another fence. So [they] did travel quite a distance."

Who was shooting, at whom, and from where, is what police are investigating. The shooter could have been on foot, or conducting a drive-by shooting. The LAPD say the man and child were in the "wrong place, at the wrong time."

The man, described as being in his 30s, remains in critical condition, according to L.A. Now.
