First Safe Surrender Baby of 2011
A baby handed over to authorities as part of the Safe Surrender program on Friday was the first this year, reports the Daily Breeze.
The baby's mother gave birth at a hospital in West Covina. The infant -- a girl -- is now in protective custody and will be put up for adoption.
The Safely Surrendered Baby Law took effect in January of 2001, with the stated goal of keeping newborns from harm or death that could be the result of abandonment.
