SWAT Versus 'Granny': Northridge Standoff Ends With Woman's Surrender

crimescenetape-110.jpg An elderly woman labeled a "granny" by the Daily Breeze is in custody this morning following a standoff with the Los Angeles Police Department's SWAT team, according to LA Now. The woman, whose identity has not been released, is said to be in her sixties, and may be suffering from mental illness, according to an LAPD spokesman.

The episode began on Monday evening, when the woman allegedly "threatened her brother," while "brandishing a rifle." Early this morning, she had barricaded herself in her home on the 17200 block of Devonshire Street in Northridge; soon after the property was surrounded by the SWAT team. Officers "fired multiple rounds of tear gas into the home," prompting her eventual surrender.
