If You Feel Like You're Being Watched in North Hills, You Are: LAPD Sets Up 9 Wireless 24/7 Surveillance Cameras

Do you like being watched? In one part of North Hills, pedestrians and motorists won't have much choice. The Los Angeles Police Department has set up a set of nine wireless surveillance cameras that will beam real-time footage of the area back to LAPD HQ 24/7, according to CBS2. The cameras, located in the Safer Cities Initiative Area, are part of a larger plan to fight crime in North Hills.

Much like one of the philosophies behind the red light cameras set up at intersections, the LAPD believe that these cameras will "act as a deterrent" for would-be law-breakers. Crimes expected to be caught on tape include hit-and-run auto accidents, assaults, and vehicle theft and break-ins.

The LAPD's Safer Cities Initiative program, in place since 2006, began as a program to improve conditions on L.A.'s Skid Row and four other neighborhoods. The LAPD says the SCI's goal "is to create an environment conducive to change so that those without hope today may find it tomorrow." In North Hills, the SCI area is the regions bordered by Nordoff, Roscoe, the 405 Freeway and Van Nuys Boulevard; the other SCI areas are MacArthur Park, Baldwin Village and Hollywood around Highland Avenue.

Addressing the issue of privacy, the LAPD say they "will be posting signs to alert people that they are being recorded."
