LAPD Officer Thrown From Truck, Killed In 101 Fwy Crash
An off-duty Los Angeles police officer died at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center on Saturday morning following a solo crash on the eastbound Ventura 101 freeway. According to police, the officer was thrown from his pickup truck, still belted into the driver's seat, after striking a guard rail at the Van Nuys Boulevard exit at 3:21 a.m., reports the Daily News.
A California Highway Patrol officer said in a statement that the driver "drifted off the main travel portion of the roadway" and drove into a metal guardrail at the exit. "The guard rail penetrated the interior of the pickup," the CHP officer said, pushing both the driver's seat and its occupant out the rear window.
Notes the Daily News, LAPD was still contacting the victim's family three hours after the crash and said they could not yet release the officers name.
