'Good Old-Fashioned Police Work' Nabs Freeway Shooter
A suspect has been arrested in connection with a shooting spree on California Highway 163 that wounded a 21-year-old University of San Diego student on her way to class earlier this month, reports LA NOW. According to the county district attorney Bonnie Dumanis, the CHP was able to identify the suspect from DNA found on the shell casings recovered from the freeway.
Said Dumanis in an interview on KUSI-TV, "This was just good old-fashioned police work," reports LA NOW. The alleged shooter may have fired more than 12 shots, presumably at random, along the freeway during the April 5, rush-hour incident. A second driver who was not injured reported his vehicle had been struck by a bullet.
Dumanis said the suspect would probably be arraigned Friday and faced possible charges of attempted murder, assault with great bodily injury and shooting into an occupied vehicle. She declined to say whether the suspect's DNA was on file because he has a criminal record. The wounded student "is doing just fine" after surgery, she said.
The name the suspect has not been released and a press conference is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
