Vons Tops Whole Foods in Seafood Sustainability Report

Greenpeace's latest scorecard measuring various supermarket chains' commitments to sustainable seafood may come as a surprise. The polesitter is not Whole Foods and certainly not Bristol Farms... it's one of the largest grocery chains in the United States. Safeway, which owns and operates all VONS and Pavilions supermarkets (among others), captured the top spot in Greenpeace's fifth update of its Carting Away the Oceans rankings.

Safeway has made great strides according to the report, publishing a serious canned tuna policy and supporting clean aquaculture technologies. Who knew?

In another shocker, Target, ranked #2. You can buy fish at Target... to EAT?! Actually this falls under the SuperTarget banner which isn't likely to be found this side of Palmdale.

We didn't misread the chart. Safeway (Vons), with a score of 64.61, just beats out #4 Whole Paycheck Foods (61.77). On the flipside, Trader Joes (#12) and Costco (#11) both score in the mid 40s. SuperValu, which operates Albertson's and Bristol Farms, ranked #18 at 15.0 -- a big fail on a scale requiring 40 points for a passing grade.
