THEATER
In the LBC tonight, Francois Chau (Dr. Chang of Lost’s Dharma Initiative) stars in a free, staged reading of Henry Ong’s Sweet Karma. The play focuses on the life life of Dr. Haing Ngor, a Cambodian immigrant who fled the Khmer Rouge regime in search of a new life in LA. You may remember that Ngor won an Oscar for his role in The Killing Fields only to be murdered a few years later. 7 pm at the International City Theatre.
LEARN*
The Grammy Museum presents the second class in the Introduction to Hip-Hop series. 7:30 pm. The seminar introduces the essential elements and basic history of hip-hop. Tonight’s class covers the Golden Age of Hip-Hop and its rise into a multi-billion dollar industry with its own culture. The final class is on April 12 and will cover the more controversial elements of the genre. The class is taught by the Museum’s Executive Director Bob Santelli. Doors at 7 pm. Tonight REDCAT screens Betzy Bromberg’s latest film Voluptuous Sleep Series tonight at 8:30 pm.The two-part 16mm film is her first in five years, and a “mesmerizing two-part 16mm meditation on the nuances of light, sound and feeling evoked through the poetic artifices of cinema.” Tickets: $9, $7 students with ID and $5 for CalArts students, faculty and staff.
BENEFIT
LA and Broadway’s theater talent take the stage tonight for the one-night only cabaret program: Rebuild Japan: A Benefit Concert at The Pasadena Playhouse. 7:30 pm. Proceeds will go the the American Red Cross and its efforts to in quake- and tsunami-ravaged Japan. Tickets: $75 for cabaret seating (includes two drinks), and $30 for balcony seating. A raffle warms up the crowd at 6:30 pm.
