Earning less than his predecessor, incoming Los Angeles Unified Superintendent John Deasy has volunteered to take a 17-percent reduction in salary, a loss of nearly $55,000 per year, amid the school district's budget related job cuts.

On Saturday, Deasy told school board members "to withold part of his annual salary as they continue to work out a budget deficit for the new year," reports KTLA.

"...given our current circumstances, at this time I respectfully will not accept the salary offered in your contract.”"

Union workers critical of the district's potential 7000 teacher layoffs, praised the decision.
