Slake throws a book release party tonight at the Echo for Daniel Hernandez.
BOOK PARTY
Slake: Los Angeles hosts a reading and party at the Echo tonight for Down and Delirious in Mexico City, the first book by Slake contributor Daniel Hernandez. The book is a collection of stories about the artists, musicians and neighborhoods of the city. In addition to the reading, there will be performances by local acts DJ Total Freedom, Crazy Band, Sister Mantos, and DJ Lengua. Doors at 8 pm. RSVP recommended.

READING
Hammer Readings series presents Rhonda Janzen tonight at 7 pm. She authored the NYT bestselling memoir Mennonite in a Little Black Dress, and Babel’s Stair, a collection of poems. She was the University of California poet laureate in 1994 and 1997. Free. Parking is available under the museum for $3 after 6 pm.

MINDSHARE*
The monthly Mindshare meetup gives LA’s intellectual types a chance to learn and drink together for an evening of “enlightened debauchery.” Tonight’s topics are about sex, and include: How Sex, the Red Queen and Parasites Control the World, Sensual Foods: Aphrodesia and the 6th Sense and A Brief History of Masturbation. There’s an after-party with jazz, hors d’oeuvres, games and prizes, too. At LA Center Studios in Downtown LA. Doors at 7, the program begins at 8:30 pm. Admission: $30.

BOOK SIGNING
Local LA author Dana Precious holds a book signing and reading for the just-released Born Under a Lucky Moon at 7 pm tonight at Barnes and Noble on the Third Street Promenade. The book, set in 1986, recounts the story of Jeannie Thompson’s colorful family with “surprise marriages, a renegade granny, a sprinkler system cursed by the gods, and myriad other factors Jeannie blames for her full-tilt, out-of-control existence.”

FILM EDITING WORKSHOP
If you’d like to learn more about the understated artform of editing, then head over to a workshop/lecture with Thomas Ethan Harris for In the Cut: Employing the Art of Editing seminar tonight at the Spielberg Theatre at The Egyptian. Get practical tips on: When do you employ the jump cut, avoid a reverse shot or cut elliptically? Get"dialectical montage" and "suturing" explained and find out how "cutting to a character's POV enhance a film? Admission: $20 General, $15 Student/Senior, $12 Cinematheque member. 7:30 pm.
