LAUSD to Staff: You Might Be Fired! We're Just Not Sure Yet

Is it worse to find out that your job is being terminated, or to find out that you have a year to worry about whether your job might be terminated?According to the Daily Breeze, that's a question over 5,000 LAUSD employees may soon be able to answer. The paper reports that the Los Angeles school board will meet on Tuesday to decide whether those employees -- 4,000 of whom are teachers -- will receive notices that their jobs for the 2011-2012 school year are on the line.

The Board is required to send notices to both employees who are being let go, and those who are in danger of being let go, and the 5,000 number represents the worst-case scenario. According to the Daily Breeze:

"We must plan for the worst because it just might happen," Deputy Superintendent John Deasy wrote in a memo to the board and Superintendent Ramon Cortines.

The cuts are being considered because of a $408 million budget deficit this coming school year.

Most of the affected employees would receive notices no later than March 15. A separate notice would have to be sent by June 30 to let employees if they will, in fact, lose their jobs.
