‘Outside, Looking In’ at C.A.V.E. Gallery

-By Lauren Lloyd/Special to LAist

As the sole gallery in Venice showcasing the new contemporary art movement, C.A.V.E. Gallery’s upcoming show, Outside, Looking In, is a fantastical new collection of this daedal technique. Featuring three prolific multidisciplinary artists - Macsorro (Los Angeles), Patrick Gannon (Tokyo) and Shay Davis (San Diego), the show’s opening reception is tonight, Feb. 11, from 7-10pm. Macsorro and Davis will be present.

Bobbing to the beats courtesy of three prominent DJs - DJ Trek Lewis, DJ BusRider and DJ Mr. NumberOnederful - attendees will experience a synthesis of hyper-stylized paintings and hand cut paper collage, plus an installation by Gannon. A live painter is featured at every opening reception, and John Park will be at easel tonight. “He’s really fun to watch because he’s fast and his paintings unfold in a short period of time,” says Patrick Iaconis, Co-owner of C.A.V.E. This mixture of visuals and sound adheres to the gallery’s name, which is an acronym for Center for Audio and Visual Expression.

Inspired by personal motivations, all three artists have been crafting their series for about one year. Iaconis named the show upon the artists’ completion of their works, unifying all creations. “I think what unifies them is their ability through their technique to create these little dioramas where there’s definitely a lot of narrative happening in each piece. It almost feels like you’re spying on the scenes, but you’re not interfering in any way with what’s happening,” says Iaconis.

Opening nights are always exciting and busy, but if you’re unable to make an appearance, the exhibition displays through Mar. 5. All works are for sale; proceeds benefit the gallery and artists and in turn, the community.
