Don't Take Your Guns to Town: Huizar and Martinez Declare Truce
A white flag flies in CD14 today. City council candidates Josè Huizar and Rudy Martinez publicly agreed on Tuesday to keep their campaigns focused on positive and productive conversations about the community, and to refrain from negative attacks on each other. The agreement, which happened during a candidate's forum held at the Center for the Arts in Eagle Rock, came on the heels of an email sent by Huizar campaign consultant Michael Trujillo late last week, in which Trujillo told supporters that "We are about to put a political bullet in between Rudy Martinez's forehead and make him pee in his pants too."
Trujillo was immediately fired, but Martinez told ABC News on Sunday that "I'm scared for my own life, I'm scared for my family. It's sad that politics had to come to this."
Huizar's campaign issued an apology the same day.
At Tuesday's event, which was hosted by The Eagle Rock Association and the Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council, both candidates were asked the following question, according to a statement released by Huizar's campaign:
"We would like to ask each candidate to publicly pledge, from now and for the remainder of their campaigns, to focus on community issues and solutions rather than personal attacks. Do you both agree?"
Each responded by saying, "Absolutely, yes."
