Packers. Steelers. Who will prevail? Biff knows. Watch him abuse the privilege - and McFly - Thursday in Back to the Future II, playing alongside the timeless original at the New Beverly. It's part of a touchdown weekend that packs in two thrillers from the French Hitchcock, Henri-George Cluzot (the masterful Diabolique & the unfinished, psychedelia-tinged Inferno) and the return of the steeliest balls of all, Phantasm II.

Should you lack a big enough screen to properly appreciate the Big Game, hike it to Downtown Independent, where the Super Bowl screens for free and the beer & wine are flowing! Should you lack any interest in football to properly appreciate the Big Game, the Cinefamily's live-broadcasting Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl VII, with a bitchin' BBQ & doggie diplomats from Bark 'n Bitches' pet adoption program. If you'd rather watch a down & dirty dogfight, hit them up the night before for Acts of Violence. The explosive blend of brutal action, screwball comedy & marital drama kicks off February's HFS 2010 line-up (what, no Serbian Film?)!

Elsewhere, Payback keeps the heat on. The Iranian women's revenge picture opens UCLA Film & Television Archives' 11th annual Celebration of Iranian Cinema. Payback's writer/director Tahmineh Milani boils down the film's themes - and controversy - thusly: "a society that reduces women to mere sexual objects has to pay a very high price for it." Milani appears for Friday's screening of the film, as well as Saturday's symposim Iranian Cinema Today, which precedes a screening of addiction drama Salve.

Hollywood films from the '30s are rare enough (bless Old Town Music Hall for putting one up every week!), but UCLA pulls off a truly one-of-a-kind event Sunday with two pioneering Iranian films from that period. The Lor Girl is Iran's first talkie, and may be the oldest surviving Iranian film. Co-feature Mr. Haji, The Movie Actor will be projected from a digital source, but accompanied by a live score from Michael Mortilla, so it all evens out. UCLA's Celebration of Iranian Cinema continues through the rest of the week & month, so keep your eyes peeled.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive from readers like you will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
