Tonight at 7:30 pm, David Ulin, editor and book critic, discusses his latest book: The Lost Art of Reading: Why Books Matter in a Distracted Time. He argues that literature matters because it “engages us in intellectual thought, and in empathy.” He’ll be in discussion with Hollywood heavyweight film producer Peter Guber. BOOKS
Astronomer Mike Brown is at Vroman’s tonight at 7 pm to discuss his book How I Killed Pluto and Why It Had It Coming. He’s the guy whose discovery of the planet Eris led to the controversial demotion of Pluto as a planet. It’s a first-person account of astronomy, our place in the universe and how he was subjected to hate mail from schoolchildren and scrutiny of TV reporters.
CARTOONS
Jerry Beck’s Animation Tuesdays at Cinefamily holds the program Cartoon Noir tonight at 8 pm. The film historian brings hard-boiled animation to the big screen with Daffy, Tweety and Goofy riffing on classic film noir. Rare 35mm and 16mm film prints of some of the funniest, violent and sexy cartoons ever made. Tickets: $12.
