The Giffords Shooting: Gunman ID'd, 6 Dead, 12 Wounded, Press Conference Scheduled For Tonight

Six people died, including a 9-year-old and a federal judge, and 12 were injured today when a guman opened fire outside of a Tucson, AZ grocery store during a public event with US Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

Chief Judge John Roll of the U.S. District Court for Arizona and a 9-year-old whose identity has been withheld were among the dead, according to authorities. Democratic congresswoman Giffords sustained a single gunshot to the head that passed through her brain, reported Dr. Peter Rhee of University Medical Center in Tucson. She is reported in critical condition

An Arizona law enforcement source and a federal law enforcement source identified the suspect as 22-year-old Jared Lee Loughner (spelled Laughner in earlier reports), reports CNN. Police also reportedly recovered a 9mm Glock handgun. A news conference to discuss developments in the case is set for 6:00 p.m. (8:00 p.m. ET / 5:00 p.m. PT).

A MySpace page belonging to a "Jared Lee Loughner," age 22, of Tucson, was deleted, reports the Huffington Post however a YouTube account with cryptic videos and writings about sleepwalking, new currency and mind control, still exists in his name. Slate weighs in on "the rush to delete embarrassing, incriminating, or inconvenient Web pages in the wake of breaking news."
