48-year-old Juan Carlos Cruz was arrested by Santa Monica police in May when two homeless men reported being offered $500 to kill Cruz's 47-year-old wife, attorney Jennifer L. Campbell.

Today, the former Hotel Bel-Air pastry chef, Food Network “Calorie Commando” host and twice published cookbook author was sentenced to nine years in prison after pleading no contest.

In a plea agreement, according to the AP, Cruz pleaded no contest in October to a charge of solicitation of murder, and prosecutors dropped a more serious count of attempted murder. Cruz is expected to only serve half of the nine-year term since no violent felony was committed, according to defense attorney Shawn Chapman Holley. Prosecutors have not released a motive. TMZ has a theory.
