Elizabeth Edwards Has Died

Elizabeth Edwards, the former wife of onetime Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards has lost her six-year-long battle with cancer, according to WRAL. Yesterday her family shared the news that Edwards, 61, had returned to her North Carolina home and was stopping treatment, after learning her cancer had spread to her liver, and that further treatment would be futile. Edwards died at her Chapel Hill home.

She had first been diagnosed with breast cancer as the 2004 presidential campaign was coming to a close and her then-husband was running for Vice President. In the ensuing years their marriage crumbled following the revelation John Edwards was having an affair and had fathered a child outside their marriage. Following their 2009 divorce, Elizabeth Edwards opted to keep a low profile. She is survived by their two daughters, Cate and Emma Claire and a son, Jack; another son, Wade, died in a car accident in 1996.
