Now Hiring: Enforcer. 'Collection Sheriff' Coming To LA
With upwards of $500 million in unpaid bills owed the city, city council took steps Monday to create a "collection sheriff," to deal with the debt, reports the Daily News.
The Committee on Revenue Enhancement confirmed those estimates from separate audits, and suggests an outside consultant could help city agencies improve collections methods while also putting, "some heat on general mangers to make sure the collections get done," said committee chairman Ron Galperin in the Daily News.
Galperin estimated $5 million to $10 million could be collected immediately for the city, and up to $100 million by mid-summer. "CORE estimated that most of the money owed the city is more than 120 days past due and half of the $500 million is more than two years overdue, making it more difficult to collect."
There is disagreement, however, on whether to title position, "inspector general," or "some other name that would command attention from department heads."
