LAst Night's Action: Trojans Lose Again in Corvallis

Oregon State Beavers defeat USC Trojans 36-7. A week after Oregon State got embarrassed at home against the awful Washington State, they decided to take out their frustrations on the visiting Trojans. They held the Trojans to only a touchdown while knocking quarterback Matt Barkley with a high ankle sprain out of the game at the end of the first half.

After forcing the Beavers to punt on their first possession, the Trojans were in a great position to score on their first possession of the game. Barkley, with the aid of a Robert Woods run of 22 yards that was supplemented with a 15-yard personal foul, got the Trojans from their three-yard line all the way to the Beaver 26 for a fourth down-and-two. Deciding to go for it, Marc Tyler didn’t extend the ball falling a yard short.

Later in the first quarter after exchanging three-and-outs, the Beavers finally struck first with Justin Kahut’s 34-yard field goal.

While not devastating, what happened next would be for the Trojans. On the first play of the second quarter, Barkley’s pass was intercepted for a pick-six by Jordan Poyer giving the Beavers the 10-0 lead.

Then the Trojans porous pass defense once again reared its ugly head as a pass interference call and a 24-yard pass play to Aaron Nichols from Ryan Katz set up the Beavers’ touchdown. In a blink of an eye, the Beavers led 17-0 and the Trojans were reeling.

The second half was no better even though backup quarterback Mitch Mustain did direct a touchdown run. But there was just too much Jacquizz Rodgers for the Trojans to handle with his 26 carries for 127 yards and a touchdown.

Barkley went 10-for-19 for 75 yards and an interception in the first half while Mustain went 8-for-17 for 60 yards. C.J. Gable led the Trojans rushers with 10 carries for 57 yards and the lone touchdown.

LA Kings defeat Boston Bruins 4-3 (SO). With their three-game slide the players had a meeting at their Boston hotel at noon on Saturday. Things really seemed to change especially when Brad Richardson scored 57 seconds into the game. The Kings led the game 3-0 on Michal Handzus’ goal at 11:17 in the first and Jarret Stoll’s 100th career goal 2:50 in the second.

But the Bruins absolutely battered goalie Jonathan Quick to the tune of 39 shots in regulation. Blake Wheeler got the Bruins started on their comeback with a goal at 4:30 in the second, while Gregory Campbell on a delayed penalty on the Kings took advantage of the extra attacker to score at 11:57 in the second.

The Bruins kept whacking at the Kings and finally on a power-play got the equalizer 13:44 in the third by Patrice Bergeron. Two more shots-on-goal by the Bruins in overtime were saved by Quick - the 41 shots-on-goal the most the Kings had given up to an opponent this season. Meanwhile the Kings only had 26 shots-on-goal hardly challenging goalie Tim Thomas especially in the third period as they were outshot 17-8.

After a scoreless five rounds, Handzus finally ended the game and the Kings three-game schneid.

New York Knicks defeat LA Clippers 124-115. Blake Griffin, Eric Gordon and Randy Foye showed up for the Clippers. No one else did. Therefore, the one-win Clippers lost their 13th game of the season. Griffin had 44 points and 15 rebounds, Gordon had 25 points and Foye had 14 points in 19 minutes played.

For the Knicks, Amare Stoudemire got 39 points and 11 rebounds, Danilo Gallinari had 31 points while Raymond Felton added 20 points.
