LAst Night's Action: Kings Shark-Bitten
San Jose Sharks defeat LA Kings 6-3. The Kings came into the game leading the Western Conference in points and with a six-game win streak, but they came out flat-footed up in the Shark Tank in San Jose. The Kings, thanks to the Sharks forecheck, kept turning the puck over on their blue line. Of course goalie Jonathan Bernier’s inability to freeze the puck didn’t help things either.
After Scott Parse opened the scoring 16:33 in the first period, in a blink of an eye the Sharks had taken a 2-1 lead thanks to goals by Ryane Clowne at 18:05 and Torrey Mitchell at 19:20.
Then strange goings on in the second period of the game. During 4-on-4 action, it appeared that Ryan Smyth scored a goal to cut the Kings’ deficit to 3-2. However the referee didn’t see it and play continued until Torrey Mitchell scored a goal 1:11 later to give the Sharks a brief 4-1 lead. Upon review Smyth’s goal counted, time was restored on the clock and Mitchell’s goal was disallowed.
After killing 22 straight penalties, the first chance the Kings had to kill a penalty they failed in the third period. Patrick Marleau scored from a shot from the blue line by Dan Boyle that hit the boards eight seconds into the penalty.
Right after Jarret Stoll scored at 7:06 in the third period to cut the lead to 4-3, Dany Heatley gave the Sharks the two-goal lead yet again. And in their second power-play the Sharks took six seconds to score at 16:08 on the stick of Joe Pavelski.
New Jersey Nets defeat LA Clippers 110-96. The Clippers had defeated the Nets at STAPLES Center six consecutive games. Not so tonight.A scary moment for the Clippers with 6:41 left in the first half. Blake Griffin was driving for a breakaway basket when Devin Harris grabbed him from behind and tackled him to the ground. Griffin was slow in getting up but was all right, playing the remainder of the game to the relief of the three Clipper fans. Harris was issued a flagrant foul type 2 and was ejected from the game. But that didn’t help the Clippers any.
UCLA Bruins defeat Pepperdine Waves 79-69.
