Some of the Best Theatre in L.A: Ovation Award Nominees Announced

Los Angeles' version of The Tony's (or Obies) is coming up in January and last night the nominees were announced. Coming out on top was Pasadena's The Theatre at Boston Court with 17 Ovation nominations, followed by 16 nominations for the Center Theatre Group (they run the Taper and Ahmanson in downtown, and Kirk Douglas space in Culver City) and 12 for the Geffen Playhouse in Westwood. Musical Theatre West in Long Beach and Reprise Theatre Company (various locations) tied with 10 nominations each.

Boston Court's sweep of nominations include seven for "Oedipus el Rey," five for "The Twentieth Century Way," two for "The Good Book of Pedantry and Wonder," which was co-produced with the Circle X Theatre Company, two for "God Save Gertrude," and one for Best Season.

Other plays that earned multiple nominations were "Parade" at the Mark Taper Forum (12 nominations), "The Wake" at the Kirk Douglas Theatre (three), "Equivocation" and "Through the Night" at The Geffen (eight and five, respectively).

The annual Ovation Awards, which will be presented on January 17th at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, is produced by the nonprofit Los Angeles Stage Alliance.
