USC defeats USC. That is, Southern California defeats South Carolina. And not on the football field, but in the Supreme Court.

In 1997 the University of South Carolina sought to trademark the interlocking “SC” logo for its merchandise. The University of Southern California objected setting off a 13-year long legal battle between the schools. The initial Trademark Trial and Appeal Board found that South Carolina’s use of the logo was “likely to cause confusion” amongst consumers thus disallowing South Carolina to use it. South Carolina appealed to the federal circuit court which upheld the decision in January. South Carolina appealed to the Supreme Court which ruled that it would not hear the case ending the battle.

South Carolina argued that its “SC” logo had two stylized, curved letters that were interlocked as opposed to Southern California’s interlocked blocked letters.
