What's Happening in Your Neighborhood? L.A. Times Launches Crime L.A.

Where is crime trending right now in Los Angeles? Mostly in the Valley. To be specific, the West Valley. Violent crime is up significantly in Northridge, Chatsworth, Canoga Park and West Hills and property crime is up significantly in Winnetka and Porter Ranch. All this is according to the LA Times' new data-based project called Crime L.A.

Using their neighborhood mapping project as a launching point, the paper today unveiled the new useful overlay tool that provides readers with neighborhood crime data and incident-trend profiles. The system covers most of Los Angeles County using LAPD and L.A. County Sheriff's Department data. It also offers e-mail alerts for neighborhood crime trends and rankings for violent and property crimes.

“Crime L.A. is designed to inform and empower people in cities and neighborhoods across Los Angeles by bringing sophisticated, modern crime analysis to anyone with access to the web,” said Times Editor Russ Stanton in a news release. “This ambitious project combines journalism, data and technology to provide crime statistics, locations and context with precision never before available to the public.”

Other hard hit areas in L.A. include Cypress Park and Harbor City for violent crime and Glassell Park, Pico-Union and portions of the Westside for property crime.
