Compton Middle School Student Collapses, Dies on Campus

Authorities in Compton are investigating the death of 13-year-old Luis Fraire, a 7th grade student at Whaley Middle School [map].

Fraire "collapsed on Tuesday while walking toward the boys' locker room," according to abc7, and was pronounced dead at a local hospital. He had allegedly "complained of chest pains," and suffered from heart problems.

Despite the recent extreme heat conditions, Fraire's death is not thought to be related to the weather, notes LA Now. However, Fraire's schoolmates told KTLA "that on Monday, the hottest day of the year, they were 'punished' and forced to stand outside in the 113-degree heat."
