Pencil This In: Lobsterfest in San Pedro, Titus Andronicus-Zombie Joe Style and a Monthly Mindshare
LOBSTERFEST
The Port of LA’s Lobsterfest starts today and continues through Sunday. This is LA’s largest lobsterfest with a music lineup that includes Saint Motel, Fitz and the Tantrums, John Doe and Exene Cervenka. For non-lobster lovers, there will be fare provided by food trucks: Nom Nom truck, Ragin Cajun and Nana Queens from The Great Food Truck Race, Coolhaus and the new Fox Pizza Bus, a double-decker, woodfire pizza mobile who will be testing their debut fare at the fest. Tickets: $9 adults (find $2 off coupon on their website). Kids under 12 are free.
ART*
The Fix Gallery hosts an opening reception tonight for Begin Again, a “mixed media event,” with author Elizabeth Rosner and emerging artists Ryan McCann, Denise Niziri, and Sage Gracie. The evening features an open viewing of the art, an 8:30 pm Q&A with the artists and Peter Mays of the Los Angeles Arts Association, and a special raffle of an original piece of work designed by the three artists collectively. Summerwood Winery of Paso Robles will pour complimentary tastings of their wines. 7-10 pm.
BOOKS
Authors Steven Roby and Brad Schreiber will discuss and sign their new biography, Becoming Jimi Hendrix: From Southern Crossroads to Psychedelic London, the Untold Story of a Musical Genius (Da Capo Press). They're also bringing an electric guitar to raffle off at the event, so be sure to buy your copy of the book here to get a raffle ticket. 7:30 pm.
THEATER
Zombie Joe’s Underground and STS Productions transform Shakespeare’s earliest “Roman” tragedy Titus Andronicus into a “gothic, grand guignol vampire tale of inhuman blood lust and revenge.” Opens tonight at 8:30 pm and runs Fridays and Saturdays through Oct. 16. Tickets: $15.
MINDSHARE
Tonight’s the monthly Mindshare event at Exchange LA filled with “enlightened debauchery.” It starts at 7 pm for cocktails and mixing, with the program beginning at 8:45. On the speaker’s list tonight are: Mike Dooley, VP of Product & Marketing Development, Evolution Robotics, Alicia Danforth / Ph.D. candidate & Research Associate, Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute, Azhar Hussain / Founder, TTXGP, and Andrew Macgregor / Founder, Tiziano Project. There will be interactive exhibits, art and a dance party ends the evening. Tickets: $20.
